Notes

The course introduces students to traditional ethical theory and then explores some of the main positions emerged in the field of environmental ethics. In particular, we will examine a number of efforts to remedy the anthropocentrism of traditional views, by expanding the circle of moral concern to include more than human beings. We will apply ethical reasoning and critical thinking to topics such as: responsibilities to future generations, the problem of the moral standing of human and nonhuman species and wilderness, the impact of different worldviews upon environmental behavior, the potential and/or desirability of developing specific environmental virtues that contribute to flourishing, animal ethics and rights, ecofeminism, values in and toward the natural environment, climate change, environmental justice, energy ethics.

Expectations and Prerequisites (required course work):

Attendance of classes, active participation and the preparation of short written homework such as ethical reflections. Writing a solid research paper on a topic of your choice that relates to our class. Good proficiency in the English language (at least level B1 of the CEFR) is advisable although not compulsory.

Assignments:

  1. Weekly Assignment/Exercise:

Every week, each student writes a “moral reflection” in English concerning the reading for that week. I will provide feedback. These reflections should be around 500 words each.

  1. Main assignment:

Write a research paper on a topic that you are passionate about. Length: around 3000 words. You will receive multiple feedbacks on this assignment. More details at the beginning of the course.
