On 15 October 2023, the ARRTI Symposium "Smart City: more sustainable and liveable?", organized in cooperation with the KIT Institute for Urban and Landscape Design (IESL ) and the KIT Science Week, took place at the Triangel.
The smart city concept was discussed with the participation of 60 Karlsruhe citizens, which is presented as a possible solution to the challenges of modern cities: in addition to population growth and traffic problems, there are also, above all, a shortage of living space, environmental pollution and a lack of social integration. In the discussion, technological approaches, such as smart buildings or new forms of administration such as e-government, were critically questioned, for example, how inclusive or exclusive these technologies are, what risks there are with regard to data protection and privacy, and who benefits most from the introduction of such technologies uses and what dependencies they create.
